EDITORIAL— Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

THIS ISSUE, not much of news has been gathered as our correspondents and beat reporters were busy with different Christmas parties sponsored by various institutions and government offices.

The past weeks had been a week of gift giving and gift-getting, and everyone got theirs.

In both cases, with a lot of love and care.

It’s Christmas time in the city again, and no city knows how to celebrate the season quite the way we do.

Maybe it’s because Puerto Princesa has its own version of a larger than life Santa Claus, no other than Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn. And maybe it’s because there’s much festivities around the city — there’s Pista Na! Pasko Pa! at the City Baywalk with the tallest giant Christmas tree lighted, and the two giant Christmas trees at the Provincial Capitol with Paskuhan 2010. Or maybe not.

In any case, we certainly know there’s more to the holidays than receiving. It is better to give, after all.

Puerto Princesa just might be the most giving city there is. It has been said that charity begins at home, but it certainly doesn’t end there.

It ends in somebody else’s home.

We’re certainly off to a good start.

There are countless examples of Christmas spirit that makes our home so special.

Over the next couple of weeks, Puerto Princesans will rise to the challenge, turning tragedy into triumph for countless families.

Like we always have.

It doesn’t take a big bank balance, just a big heart, to make a difference at this time of year.

It might be something as simple as helping an elderly neighbor cross the street.

It’s the generosity of Puerto Princesans that has always made Puerto Princesa such a special place.

You can expect the call, or calls, to come out in the next few days. “We need your help.” And you can expect those calls to be answered.

Whether it’s this, that or the other thing, this is the time of year when Puerto Princesans are quick to give their time or money to a good cause.

Because it’s the right thing to do.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!
